Rob Edwards along with O'Neil are two of the initial candidates in the frame to replace Vitor Pereira as head coach of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The previous coach was sacked on the weekend after the squad's 10-match without a victory start to the Premier League campaign.
Furthermore both candidates - each of whom have historic associations to the team - are among the options to be evaluated by the club leadership.
Edwards is currently at another club, which would pose a potential hurdle to his hiring at Molineux.
However the former Luton head coach - who made more than 100 of appearances for the club during his time as a player - is said to be a leading contender for the vacancy.
The 42-year-old is reportedly enjoys backing from the club board as they start the search of appointing a fresh manager.
O'Neil is additionally appearing as a unexpected candidate, even though he would be a shock choice considering he was released by the club in December last year.
The ex- West Ham player is currently unemployed meaning the club would not be required to provide any compensation.
